I haven't been to update school yet. I am anxious to see the new motor offering - I hope it isn't a POS like their "mini" 4 stroke trimmer engines. Toro released a service bulletin a few months ago about the sale of the R*Tec snowblower motor to Briggs. Here in the southern end of snowblower country I have developed a healthy respect for this motor. I was prepared to hate it because it replaced the beloved Suzuki on high end single stage snowblowers. Trying to noodle out the reasons for this sale, my remarkably uninformed self has come up with a few thoughts: 1. Briggs needs a great 2 cycle snow motor (we all remember their last one) 2. Toro would have had to purchase emissions credits from another manufacturer since the only engine they build themselves is a 2-stroke. Toro may have decided that this was not worth the trouble of dealing with another company on its terms- not a good long-term decision. Selling the R*Tec to Briggs was probably a great answer because they could negotiate a sweet deal on motors and Toro, like Briggs, is rolling in cash so the sale of this motor was convenient but not nescessary.
Another thought, this deal makes parts for a Lawn Boy DuraForce motor available at Briggs dealers, not just Toro/Lawn Boy shops. I don't know if DuraForce parts will be Briggs-sourced or will still come from Toro, but there is lots of commonality between these 2 engines. My biggest concern is for the availibility of these parts- Toro has an amazing fill rate on parts orders- I hope the Briggs central distributors take parts availibility seriously- and soon.
